About Journey's End
Journey's End Animal Sanctuary provides lifetime care and shelter for dogs, cats, horses, pigs, sheep, and birds that have been abused, neglected or have special needs. Rather than emphasizing adoption, Journey's End provides a homelike setting where animals can enjoy the remainder of their lives in a comfortable, loving atmosphere.
The sanctuary is located in Glenwood, near DeLand, Florida. They currently have capacity for over 300 animals. At this time, they are at full capacity and have a lengthy waiting list. Crucially, they are very short of funds.
The founder and proprietor of Journey's End, Florence Thuot, started the shelter in 1974. At that time, she and her late husband Paul were employed as animal cruelty investigators for the Volusia County Sheriff's Department. They began their compassionate endeavor by bringing home some of the most needy animals.
In order to preserve Journey's End, a board of directors was formed in August, 1988 and non-profit status 501(c)(3) was granted in 1999.
I have long been an active advocate for Journey's End and, having seen at first hand the unique nature of what they do, agreed to become a trustee in 2013 in order to help support the work of this very special place. These photos of Florence with Lilo the dog (above), Junior the hound (right) and myself (below) were taken on my visit there in March 2013.
An Urgent Plea for Donations - a letter from Journey's End trustee Juli Maltagliati, November 2013
Journey's End is in a real bind. Florence, who is 85, has even depleted her personal financial resources (which aren't much to begin with). Typically, the newsletter that goes out every 3 months or so will bring in some donations--- the current newsletter is ready, but Florence can't even afford to pay to send it out right now. This time of year tends to be a rough patch, but this year is worse than usual.
Please consider sending a donation, however small, if you possibly can. Also, if you should know anyone in the media in central Florida (from Orlando to Jacksonville) who might be interested in doing an appeal story for Journey's End, please let me know. Such publicity has been a great help in the past.
Donations can be made at the website:
or by check to: Journey's End Animal Sanctuary, P.O. Box 220163, Glenwood, FL 32722
Thank you so much for any help you can give!!!!
I'm giving Journey's End Sponsorships in lieu of gifts this year, you should see the applications and checks closer to Christmas. Thank you for doing what you do! I know kids wouldn't understand that type of gift but COME ON, adults...do we really need more STUFF??? Denise Brooks via Facebook
